DR versus CR

X-Ray has come a long way since Rontgen invented it in the year 1895. The first X-Ray machine came to India in the year 1900. In conventional X-Ray machines the images were captured on X-Ray films which were then developed in a dark room. Around 1970's came Computed Radiography. In this the film was replaced by a digital cassette. The image is captured on this digital cassette which is then inserted into a scanner to get the X-Ray image on a computer screen. This image is far more clear than the conventional x-ray images.

The latest development in the field of X-Ray imaging is Digital Radiography (DR). In this system, the image is captured on a Digital Plate which is then transmitted directly to the computer using bluetooth technology. In this system there is no scanner and the quality of DR image is far superior than the CR.

The CR System costs in the range of Rs. 15-18 lacs while the DR System costs in the range of Rs. 25-30 lacs. High cost of the equipment means that very few hospitals or diagnostic centres in the country have DR systems installed. Test and Results

Digital X-Ray through DR is used for getting high resolution images of Chest, Joints, Abdomen, Bones, PNS and other body organs. The quality of Digital Radiography images is so high that it is comparable to most CT Scan images. The radiation dose used in Digital Radiography is much lesser than the Conventional X-Ray or the CR System.

X-Ray is an excellent diagnostic modality to diagnose any kind of bone fractures or joint pain. X-Ray of the chest is done to diagnose pneumonia or other lung diseases. X-Ray of the KUB region is done to diagnose stones in the kidneys or the ureter. X-Ray of the abdomen is done to diagnose any kind of perforation in the intestine. X-Ray of the knee joint gives valuable information about the joint spaces and the cartilage in patients suffering from knee joint pain. X-Ray of the spine is done to diagnose the causes of back pain and to detect any deformity in the spine.

The only limitation of X-Ray is that maximum 15 inches of the body organ can be scanning in one X-Ray. CT Scan on the other hand has no limitation and can be used to scan the whole body.
